Basic Do's and Dont's of Liquid Latex.

Liquid latex is a fun product to work with, and it can create some amazing things. It works well as an adhesive as long as something to use as a 'second skin'. It's fairly inexpensive, and is easy for beginners who just wanna make a cool halloween look to work with!

Liquid Latex used to create the peeling of an old blister.

I use Kryolan Thin Latex, which costs $12.00 AUD from their website for 100ml, it's really good quality, and isnt too much if you just want to create a halloween look!
Be prepared though, liquid latex, no matter the brand will STINK. It's latex combined with ammonia, which when you open the package for the first time can be a little intimidating but don't worry, it's totally normal.

Now, some do's -

  • DO make sure you're applying the latex in a ventilated area - don't do it in a tiny room with no ventilation, the ammonia wont smell great.
  • DO use multiple thin layers. Layer, layer, layer, layer! Make sure you let each layer dry before you put the next layer on. It's a good idea to use a hairdryer to dry the layers to get this done quicker! Just make sure the hair dryer doesn't burn the person you're applying it to!
  • DO make sure that you don't place it near the eyes, the ammonia is dangerous to them, and it won't end well.
  • DO let it air if you're planning on applying it on the face - the ammonia will be too strong for the person otherwise, and there may be watery eyes!
  • DO shave ANY area before applying it. Otherwise it WILL stick.
  • DO apply vaseline or moisturiser to the skin before the latex, to make sure it doesnt harm the persons skin!
  • If you're wanting to do something to your brows, use a stick of Kryolan Eyebrow Plastic, and then use 2 coats (or so) of Sealor, and THEN apply the latex.
Don'ts-
  • DONT APPLY IT OVER HAIR! If this happens, then you're not going to want to rip it off, or it will be like waxing that area and it WILL hurt. The latex WILL bond to hair. Don't say I didn't warn you! If this happens, it's best to get in the shower and use a lot of soap, and a comb to gently pry it off the skin. Then make sure to moisturise the skin to make sure any damage is repaired quickly.
  • DON'T smell it too closely! Dont smell it on purpose, no waving the bottle under peoples noses because this can end in a blood nose!
  • DON'T dry it with a hair dryer if you're combining liquid latex with gelatin. The gelatin will melt, and could burn the person you're applying it to!
That's all I can think of for now - do you have any tips or tricks? Comment below!

More burns!

This was a 2nd degree burn, done on one of my friends. I used gelatin, liquid latex, and then a mix of kryolan grease and aqua paints to colour it. I wish I hadn't made it so yellow on the actual would - but you have to have flaws to be able to get better!

Weekly Inspirations

The more I watch Face Off the more I love Ve Neill,
I've always loved her makeup, but the personality really adds to it :)

I've also been watching the Resident Evil movies again. Those would be a total dream to work on, everyone loves a good zombie :)

I've ALSO been rewatching (Yes I've been watching too much tv) Dr Who (from 9), I love this makeup, I'd totally love to learn how to create something like this.

Obligatory Chloe Sens appreciation! #TeamChloe

REVIEW: Kryolan 6 Colour Wheel RAINBOW

I honestly need to buy a new one of these, I love it so incredibly much.
I use this for nearly every look I create, as you can make nearly any colour with it.
Pro's -
  • The colours are bold, but can be dulled down with the white and the black.
  • It actually comes with a lot of product (which is a good thing considering the fact it sells for nearly $50 in Australia)
  • The colours are really smooth, and thanks to the grease component they go on and they stay on
Con's -
  • The price! This is the only thing that puts me off. As a poor student, $50 is something I really have to save for, even though I know it'll last for a while.
  • When I say they stay on, they STAY ON. I've created bruises before, left them for a while and there's been remnants for a few days after.
Overall, it really is an awesome product, and worth purchasing!

3rd Degree Burn

I know, I know, I didn't take any in action shots - but I think I'm going to make a youtube video on this.
I'd be more inclined to call this a 2nd degree burn, but It's somewhere between 2nd and 3rd, because I didn't use gelatin or anything to create depth it looks more like a second as a third burns down much deeper.

Right off the bat I wish I'd included more black and red inside the actual open areas.

I used layers of PVC glue (used it like liquid latex), and then made little holes in it before painting it with a sponge with brown, red, yellow, and some black.

I wanted to create something that looked like a third degree burn, but I think I was just off the mark, it wasn't deep enough, though it was open, and pussy etc.

As always - my inspiration! This was from AHS, and I really loved how it looked so I thought I'd give it a try.

Weekly Inspirations

I've been watching a lot of Face Off lately, and I totally am in LOVE with Chloe Sen's work, she kicks ass. I hope to hell that she wins!

I'm also rewatching American Horror Story, leading to all sorts of awesome inspiration!

I've included this because I think we all often forget this, Kat's also a huge inspiration to me!

I have a feeling this zombie will be included often in my inspirations. I remember the first time I saw the time lapse of her makeup, totally and utterly blew me away.

We all too often forget Charles Schram's iconic work on the Wizard of Oz. Everytime I watch this movie I'm mesmerised by the work - and thankful. Thanks to him advances in makeup have been huge :)

Beginners Makeup Kit

This is my beginners makeup kit! This doesn't include my brushes, tissues, disinfectant, brush cleaner, or liquid latex but these five things are also essential :)
This is my makeup box, it was fairly cheap - tool boxes also work great!

This is the right side of my makeup kit - featuring things such as tape, spatula's, lipstick, powder, mascara, eyeliner, and a kryolan colour wheel.

This is my favorite colour wheel, it's fairly expensive but as it's a grease based paint it STICKS. You can also make nearly any colour!

Disposable mascara wands/spooly brushes are a must have especially when you're doing makeup on lots of different people.

I got this for $2 from Big W. It's a deep red lipstick and is perfect when mixed with a little blue and black for a base colour.

This is the bottom section of my kit. In it is (starting top right and going clockwise) plastic containers for putting gelatin/latex in, fake blood, gel effects kit, inglot foundation, Makeup For Ever foundation and Face & Body foundation, MAC studio fix foundation, Polyvinyl Acetate Glue, Natio tinted moisturiser, and glitter.

These are from the Geleffects wound simulation kit, which is fairly inexpensive, and works really well.

I got this for $2 in a cheap makeup store in my local mall, it's a concealer/foundation stick and is great for quickly applying a base.

I love Kryolan Aqua Color with all my heart! It's my other favorite paint :)

This is the left side of my kit, featuring (bottom drawer) Kryolan Aqua Color paints in brown, yellow, purple, and baby pink, Makeup For Ever lip kit, and a cheap red paint, (middle drawer) Makeup For Ever concealer kit (amazing for hiding 5'oclock shadow as it has an orange concealer!), a cheap brown eyeshadow pallete, Australis Go Camo concealer, a Maybelline concealer, and an old Makeup For Ever lipgloss which I rarely use!

I also always keep a lot of cotton makeup remover pads, q-tips, and cotton balls, along with lots of makeup application sponges with me.

This is my eyeshadow pallete, it's Makeup For Ever, and I love it :)

These are all the colours I use frequently - the light brown I use most often as I used it to fill in my brows for a long time. I believe that these colours are the perfect base colours to start with!

I also always keep a moisturiser with me, as makeup (especially sfx) can dry your skin out really badly.

Thanks for reading! Any questions just comment below, I'll get back to each and every one of you asap! :)
